happiness
this video can be found here and is alastair campbell delivering birmingham university's 2011 baggs memorial lecture on tuesday 12 july. in summary what he said is:
- it is interesting that though we have grown much wealthier as a country and, most of us, as individuals, we are not happier.
- poverty can certainly cause unhappiness, but it does not automatically follow wealth causes happiness.
- the New Economics Foundation (nef) brought together research from 400 scientists worldwide to come up with the equivalent of “5 a day” for well-being. they are:
- connect with the people around you
- be active
- take notice – be curious and aware of the world around you
- keep learning – try something new
- give – do something nice for a friend or a stranger
- much of our media, most of the time, is now slavishly dedicated to making people feel jealous of others, blaming others for their problems, hating others for their actions and attitudes.
- the relentless negativity is a relatively new thing. the positive to negative ratio in our national press has gone from 3-1 to 1-18 in three decades.
- i have one big suggestion for a nice base for happiness – focus more on your own life and experience and put the media largely to one side. there came a day when I genuinely ceased to care what the media said about me. it was liberating. it has helped my happiness.
- i have one big suggestion for a nice base for happiness – focus more on your own life and experience and put the media largely to one side. there came a day when I genuinely ceased to care what the media said about me. it was liberating. it has helped my happiness.
- for me happiness is not about the good moments – though they can build towards it - but about fulfilment.
- i think the pursuit of those things that many people may think make them happy – fame, money, alcohol, drugs, quick hit relationships – are less likely to make people happy than give them a sense of elation the endurance of which is all too elusive.
- i think the pursuit of those things that many people may think make them happy – fame, money, alcohol, drugs, quick hit relationships – are less likely to make people happy than give them a sense of elation the endurance of which is all too elusive.
- any sense of happiness requires a sense of fulfilment and any fulfilment, worthwhile fulfilment, requires struggle. it doesn’t come easy.

a happy designer
in this ted video stefan sagmeister says - on the subject of what keeps us happy - that his research suggests:
- that climate has no influence;
- income has very little;
- ethnicity doesn't make a difference;
- nor physical attractiveness;
- nor age;
- nor health (where problems are manageable);
but that having several meaningful friendships does makes a difference to our happiness
in passing he also points out how our unconscious mind affects the big decisions we make
how else could it be explained that - compared with what would be expected statistically using usa data - that:
- more men called george live in georgia;
- more men called denis become dentists;
- more women called paula marry men called paul
he then shares what makes him happy as a designer - which is
1) doing more of the kind of stuff he likes to do
2) thinking without pressure;
3) travelling to places;
4) not being stuck behind a computer screen all day;
5) working on projects that matter to me;
6) having things that come back from the printer well;
7) working on projects that have a visible impact;
8) being involved in a project where 50% is new to me.
He concludes by saying that keeping a diary supports personal development

talking to others on the train and asking ......
why are you here?
what motivates you more - fear or love? and why?
do you believe in government?
- do you believe they tell the truth?
- do you think they have your best interests at heart?
what does freedom mean to you?
what makes you happy in life?
what is the meaning of life?

measuring happiness
this video of an rsa event has some useful stuff
jim clifton explains how they asked leaders what they need to know to do their job better - and from that devised 100 questions that if asked pretty much allow us to know their state of mind
they then built consistent sampling frames through 150 countries then asked the questions once a year - at the end they have a hunch what wellbeing, happiness, behavioural economics is about to link how people are thinking to how people are transacting
so what is the world thinking? - gross simplification but - I want a good job (used to be peace, freedom, family). job creation is new currency of world leaders. 2nd thing is health care
jim harter - what is wellbeing? - evaluating (stays fairly constant) and experience (varies - up in holidays, down on mondays). so what important to the evaluating and experience measures - basic needs, good jobs, health, housing, income (more evaluation), learning/autonomy (more experience).
in uk key findings - less than 50% thriving, work environment is a weakness, 46% say their community is getting better as a place to live, different incomes have similar health and clean water access but different perceptions of their communities and safety, 1 in4 are obese
ben leedle - well being is bigger than physical health - financial, social, career, emotional, physical, community - key is to understand 1st order impacts between conditions and behaviours to put together a simulation model so eventually can assess impact of various actions (e.g obesity is driving over a 1/3rd of the modelled productivity loss)
q&a at the end
- power of the data can help us choose, relationships between factors not always obvious
- need to ask children also
- will data become a game changer itself?
- countries are making different choices (simplistic e.g. - scandanavian use wealth to see more of each, anglo- saxon use to escape each other)
- what saying summary - engaged worker is key (25% are actively disengaged), look at range of factors affecting happiness
