In eulogising Reverend Clementa Pinckney (the pastor of the Mother Emanuel African American church who was shot dead in his own sanctuary along with eight of his flock in June 2015) President Obama said .....that taking down the flag from the grounds of South Carolina’s state capitol in Columbia, “would not be an act of political correctness, it would not be an insult to the valour of Confederate soldiers, it would simply be an acknowledgement that the cause for which they fought – the cause of slavery – was wrong.”
