kew's seed bank
in summary
- all human life depends on plants - and plants are under threat - from us
- so we need to save plants - by saving their seeds (their future)
- the largest seed bank in the world is @ kew uk (and is distributed around world)
- with loads of partners and governments helping
- need to be dried then stored at minus 20C with low humidity - to remain viable
- germination tests every 10 years to test still viable
- 3 billonth seed now stored - 10% of all species in world
- £2008 per species
