the godfirst blog has a summary of part of richard foster teaching on simplicity in his book "celebration of discipline” - my summary of the summary is:
- buy things that are useful to you, not for status or extra features you won't use
- ask ‘is this thing going to add value to my life, or will it enslave me?’
- give things away, de-accumulate.
- don't buy stuff just because it was on tv
- learn to enjoy things without owning them
- develop a deeper appreciation for god’s creation without the need for extras to do so
- don't buy-now, pay later
- reject stuff that is produced via oppression of - or at the expense of - others
