emotional literacy
pip wilson explains how - based on a study he did with gangs back in 1979 - he concluded that it wasn't housing or educational deprivation but emotional deprivation (inability to express themselves), pulled down emotional shutters to survive. often feelings drive behaviour - so when you feel something put a word to it - emotional literacy
e.g. saying "you make me sick" is aggressive and dumping - often with a finger wag
whereas "I feel upset by what you said" is sharing and not dumping - they are my feelings
kids who do crime are often driven by feelings - violence, anger, frustration
part of being wholeness (that christians believe in)
lens we see others through - can see behaviours - but not what is driving the behaviour
community can give a place where people can share
