she recounts that:
- sometimes she chose the verse that best seemed to represent the message of the whole book - so for ecclesiastes - “vanity of vanities, says the preacher, vanity of vanities! all is vanity.”
- other times she chose the only verse that seemed even remotely appropriate to stand alone - so forleviticus “speak to all the congregation of the people of israel and say to them, ‘you shall be holy, for i the lord your god am holy’”
- with the historical books of the old testament she often thought the best approach was to pick the most famous line - so the 1st verse of genesis - or a representative line of the major figures that dominate the stories
- she found that the gospels ended up being the hardest to choose from
