Maralinga Test Range in the stark-wide open spaces of South Australia. "Operation Buffalo" involved setting up a village for servicemen taking part. And the team of scientists was headed by Sir William Penney who went to supervise and observe the atomic explosions.

Servicemen in canteen. Guns firing. Tanks. Bulldozer. Mock fighting. Army photographer. Vulcan bomber takes off. Various shots of guns and tanks to be used for testing atomic rays. A-Bomb explodes. Good mushroom shots. Jet plane takes off. Scientist in protective clothing walk round the contaminated area. Various shots of the damage done to army vehicles and clothing from the A-Bomb."

She inspected a Guard of Honour of ten Airline captains and had a word with each of them. The Queen then made a speech, emphasising the great advantages of up-to-the-minute Gatwick, which has been described as the most advanced airport in the world. Meanwhile, near-by Crawley New Town, had been waiting to offer its welcome to the Queen and the Prince, who drove there after the opening of Gatwick. Her Majesty saw what splendid progress Crawley has made.
