the following info is from this note by chris rhodes and is statistics that caught my eye as sort of interesting when comparing 2010 to 1970 ....

1) manufacturing industry worth was down some 8% (£162b in 1970 down to £149b in 2010 - in 2010 prices)

2) manufacturing industry as a % of total output was 11% (1970 ='d 32%)

3) services industry worth was up some 360% (£280b in 1970 up to £1t in 2010 - in 2010 prices)

4) service industry as a % of total output was 77% (1970 ='d 55%) 

5) within the services industry business services and finance accounted for 16% in 1970 and 33% in 2010

6) by gross value added construction had more than doubled (1970='d £31.9b, 2010 ='d £84.2 - at 2010 prices)

7) by gross value agriculture had decreased (1970 ='d £14.8b, 2010 ='d £9.3b - at 2010 prices)

8) construction as a % of total output was 6% in 1970 and the same % in 2010

9) agriculture as a % of total output was 3% in 1970 and 1% in 2010  

10) in terms of % of total output business services and finance overtook manufacturing in 1991 (bs&f ='d22%, m ='d 21%)
